Morzine winter 2016/2017 here we come!

Morzine winter 2016 destination guide

There is always lots going on in Morzine and with flights operating from all over the UK into Geneva Airport all year round, heading over to Morzine for that event that has caught your eye couldn't be easier!

Winter Start - 9-11 December 2016
The season kicks off in Morzine with the third edition of the Winter Start festival. Dust off your ski gear, get your skis waxed and get ready (snow permitting!) for your first turns of the 2016/2017 winter season. Lots of festivities in the resort centre too for all ages.

Winter Fairyland - 17-31 December 2016
As thoughts turn to New Year’s Eve, Morzine gives it a serious build up with two whole weeks of festival fun all based around the theme of light. As well as face painting, games and workshops for the kids, there are parades and processions including amazing human light shows. It all happens in and around the Tourist Office square.

Morzine Carnival - 7-28 February 2017
Every Tuesday during the main February winter holiday season there is a party in Morzine! All the kids get dressed up, there’s face painting and parades through the town and the chance to eat your own bodyweight in sweets with all the goodie givesways. The fun then carries on way after the kids are in bed apres-ski events for the big kids!

Morzine for the Ladies - 6-10 March 2017
A whole week in Morzine dedicated to the ladies! Feel revitalised, have fun on the pistes and relax afterwards with the girls. A full programme of workshops, events and classes just for women, with snow shoeing, yoga, pilates and massage sessions. 1 workshop is 10€, 2 workshops 15€, 3 workshops 20€, 4 workshops 25€. Tickets on sale at the tourist office.

Rock the Pistes - 19-25 March 2017
Another year of live gigs with this Portes du Soleil-wide music festival. Five big names play free afternoon gigs in the middle of the pistes starting at 13:30. There are dozens of concerts in bars and venues across the resorts in the 'Off the Pistes' programme too. In the past the likes of Charlie Winston, Lilly Wood and Babyshambles have played and so far for 2017 it's Chinese Man, Julian Perretta and Makmatah.

Morzine for the Kids - 1-8 April 2017
A whole week dedicated to the kids in Morzine during the Easter school holidays! Rendez vous in the heart of Morzine village where there'll be workshops, arts and crafts and a whole lot morefor the little ones and all for free.

Morzines weekly market, Wednesday'sMorzine Market - every Wednesday
Cheese, fruit, veg, meat, fish and a whole lot more will be on sale every Wednesday in the Place de la Poste in Morzine. The market is great to visit as it gives you a real taste of everyday French life. It's on from 08:00 to 12:30 and runs all year round.

It's worth remembering that being as popular as it is, Morzine lacks car parking, especially at peak times in the winter season such as Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays. Unless your accommodation offers private parking spaces, expect to pay for a space that might also mean a fair walk back to where you're staying, as most car parks are on the periphery of Morzine resort.

All this is why we suggest taking a transfer from the airport in Geneva straight to Morzine would be the best option for a stress-free holiday and often the best value too, especially if there's a group of you that can get together to reserve a private transfer bus.

Morzine Destination Guide

Welcome To Morzine!

Morzine village is spread out along two sides of a valley, with a mix of modern areas and the old village centre. Lifts run from both sides for skiing and boarding in winter and for mountain biking and walkers in the summer, making it the perfect all year round resort for active types.

Blue sky ski day in MorzineThe skiing in Morzine and neighbouring Les Gets is excellent for getting your 'ski legs' and once you've found them, head over to sister resort Avoriaz, where you can find more challenging skiing and then explore the whole of the vast Portes du Soleil area that stretches across France and Switzerland. In a week of skiing you could easily do different pistes every single day!

Morzine is great for familiesIn summer, Morzine is one of the best renowned areas for mountain biking in the French Alps. The resort is totally geared up for bikers in the summer months, with easy to use lifts to take your bike up, good value lift passes and even jet washers to hose down your bike at the end of the a good day of riding.

With over 650km of mountain bike trails plus freestyle and dirt parks, it's paradise on two wheels around these parts. Mountain Drop-offs is also totally geared up to summer in Morzine, with all transfer buses operating out of Geneva Airport offering bike carriage (please book this service in advance).

Morzine snowflake lattee in one of the many cafesBack at resort level, Morzine has long been a favourite destination for British holidaymakers who'll feel at home in the many English-owned bars and restaurants in town. Dotty's Coffee House does a great latte, whilst it's all very cool and hip down at Beanie's Ski Shop and Coffee Bar. There's even Berits and Brown, a very posh deli and cafe which has opened its doors in Morzine.

Morzine branded sunglassesIf, of course, you'd prefer to be immerse yourself in local life, there are lots of restaurants and bars offering Savoyard fayre - think a raclette with local reblochon cheese followed by a quick Genepy digestif or full strength Mutzig after a hard day's biking at the legendary Robinson's bar.

Morzine has an excellent live music sceneAs you can probably tell, out of all the Portes du Soleil resorts, Morzine has the most vibrant apres-ski and night life. The Bec Jaune microbrewery is a great place to start and then there are loads of popular bars to try late into the night, including the Tibetan Cafe and Cavern Bar, before perhaps venturing into L'Opera night club - but be warned, it often doesn't get going until well after midnight!

And with so much apres-ski and partying on offer in Morzine, we can highly recommend abandoning the idea of a hire car from the airport. After all, who wants to wake up feeling a little 'tired and emotional' and having to dig out of the car and then drive all the way back to Geneva - much easier to let the transfer bus take the strain all the way from Morzine to departures!
