ESF Les Houches Torchlight Descent
ESF Les Houches Torchlight Descent: A Magical Winter Spectacle
The ESF Les Houches Torchlight Descent is one of the most enchanting winter events in Les Houches. Organised by the École du Ski Français (ESF), this traditional celebration sees ski instructors carving their way down the slopes at night, each holding a flaming torch that lights up the snow with a warm orange glow. The result is a mesmerising procession of flickering light winding its way through the dark mountain landscape.
Usually held during the February school holidays and sometimes again over Christmas and New Year, the event takes place on the tourchet slopes of Les Houches, near the village centre. The atmosphere is festive, with music, vin chaud and hot chocolate available for spectators, and a spectacular fireworks display to close the evening.
The torchlight descent is a family favourite and a true highlight of the season, bringing locals and visitors together to celebrate the beauty of skiing and the magic of the mountains after dark. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience the warm community spirit that makes Les Houches so special.
