Mountain Drop-offs offers door to door transfers from Geneva Airport to Les Carroz, but sshhh, don’t tell everyone about this charming ski resort! The beauty of Les Carroz, which sits mid-way between Chamonix and Geneva, is that it is barely an hours’ drive from the airport. The resort is a mere 15 minutes up the mountain from the ‘Autoroute Blanche’ motorway, yet offers direct and easy access to the heart of the Grand Massif ski area.
And once you arrive in Les Carroz, you’ll soon realise it’s small enough to care, yet big enough to have all the facilities you need. In particular it is an excellent choice for families, especially those with young children. And with infant and toddler seats bookable in advance for free on all our transfer vehicles, getting the whole family to Les Carroz is child’s play with Mountain Drop-offs.Guide section
Les Carroz’s family appeal
Les Carroz (or Les Carroz d’Araches to give the resort its proper name) is an authentic Savoyard mountain village sitting on a sunny plateau at 1140m on the road to Flaine, where the ambience is very much relaxed and chilled out. And although it’s certainly not a party town, there is just enough to keep everyone entertained both on and off the slopes, with friendly locals too (the permanent population is around 1700).
As for the skiing, we have to admit it’s not the most challenging, but it is perfect for families Les Carroz is particularly good for children. Non-skiers wanting to watch the little ones haven’t been forgotten, with the Telecarroz lift designed to take both skiers and pedestrians up and down in order to ease access on foot to (and back down from) the departure station of the gondola.
Those helpful little extras to make your Les Carroz holiday a success
We’d never recommend walking in ski boots to the lift if you have youngsters in tow, as its a surefire recipe for stress and will probably wear you all out before you’ve even started your ski day on the slopes. The Les Carroz lift company also knows this and has come up with an ingenious solution – heated ski lockers at the bottom of the bubble lift!
For around 50€ for a week, you have a secure locker large enough for all the ski gear for a family of four. Imagine arriving in your nice comfy trainers in the morning to a lovely warm pair of ski boots? One of those small, but very significant details that makes Les Carroz such a convenient resort.
The best of Les Carroz skiing
That’s not to say Les Carroz is only suitable for kids and beginners – far from it in fact. Taking the main Kedeuze bubble lift up from resort takes you directly to the Tete des Saix, the centre point of the whole Grand Massif ski area, in just six minutes. From here you can test yourself on the steeps of Flaine, or go for a thigh-burner of a run all the way down to Morillon to give you just two options. And we must mention the Sarbotte home-run – it’s a true tree-lined delight and offers easy end of the day skiing back to resort.
Summer season Les Carroz style
Not only is Les Carroz a superb little family-favourite winter ski resort, it’s also a really nice place to head to in the summer. There are miles and miles of signposted hiking paths, mountain biking trails, canyoning, pot holing and loads more besides. So if you fancy a trip over to see the cows and goats grazing on the grassy slopes you skied down in winter, Mountain Drop-offs will organise a private transfer for you to Les Carroz in summer like in winter.
A variety of activities to make you love Les Carroz
As Les Carroz is a family-friendly resort, it will come as no surprise to learn that there are lots of things to keep non-skiers entertained. Some activities are suitably sporty, whilst others are really quite whacky. In all cases, they’re great fun and will make for great memories of the time you spent discovering lovely Les Carroz. Here’s our somewhat eclectic mix for you:content-activities.php
Aquacime is Les Carroz’s superb pool and spa centre that’s open both winter and summer seasons. Inside is a lovely pool with jacuzzi bays, sauna, steam rooms and hamman, whilst outside is a swimming pool that’s heated to 32 degrees even in winter. The views of the pistes and the snowy mountain summits will take your breath away, as you put in a few lengths of front crawl. In winter it’s open every day from 14:00-20:00 for the perfect apres-ski chill out, whilst in the summer it’s all open all day.
Go up, up, up and away when you take a hot air balloon ride from Les Carroz. This ‘must do’ activity, bookable at Les Carroz Tourist Office, costs around 200€ for 1hr15mins flying over the Grand Massif. As you soar over the mountain summits, look down and see all the resorts below you. Not the cheapest, but a truly amazing experience.
Go paragliding over Les Carroz. There are four different paragliding schools in resort, offering everything from one-off tandem flights with no previous experience necessary, to full certificated learn to paraglide courses that’ll see you going solo in the air. This is a high-thrills activity over the peaks and summits of Les Carroz that needs a good dose of bravery!
Visit the Goyave workshop on route du Serveray in Les Carroz to learn all about gemmology. Didier, dedicated jeweller and seeker of precious stones will introduce you to the study of precious stones and jewels. We think this is a truly sparkling little addition to your holiday programme that certainly makes a change from hitting the slopes.
A spot of evening snowmobiling is a great apres-ski activity for families, couples and groups alike. After the lifts have all shut, head off on a snowmobile up through the forests and pistes of Les Carroz. Pause at the summit for great sunset and night time views, then whizz back down into resort. Not the most environmentally friendly, but it is thrilling stuff.
Hike up to Lac d’Airon above Les Carroz at 1500m in summer. This is where the cows, sheep and goats all roam, you can fish for trout in the lake (you’ll need a day licence) and the nearby Ferme Auberge sells homemade cheeses and other produce for a tasty little picnic in all that fresh mountain air. This is the very essence of a mountain holiday in summer!
Madame Hodoshima brings a taste of Japan to the middle of Les Carroz! This talented lady hosts wonderful origami workshops that are utterly captivating. Geared towards both kids and adults, you’ll be folding pretty coloured paper to make the most amazing things – and you can even transform them into hanging mobiles!
